Every red superfood powder on the shelf sells the same idea: the color is the medicine. Beets, tart cherries, pomegranate, acai and aronia get freeze-dried into a scoop of deep crimson, printed with an antioxidant score, and sold as a shortcut to the produce aisle. Some of that holds up. Most of it doesn't — and the part that does depends entirely on a number the tub usually refuses to print.
Here's what the research actually supports, which single red ingredient has real performance data behind it, and the label check that separates a functional scoop from expensive red dust.
What's Actually in the Tub
Strip the marketing and a red blend is usually built from three families. Beetroot brings betalains and, more importantly, dietary nitrate. Dark berries — tart cherry, aronia, elderberry, acai — bring anthocyanins, the pigment that makes them red in the first place. Pomegranate rounds it out with ellagitannins and vitamin C.
Those compounds are real. The question is whether drying them into a scoop preserves what made the plants worth eating — and whether your serving is anywhere near the amount used in the studies cited on the label. Two separate problems, and most brands fail both. Same pattern we found writing about greens powder benefits, just in a different color.
The Antioxidant Score Doesn't Predict Anything
The big number on the front of the tub is almost always an antioxidant capacity score — how well the powder mops up free radicals in a test tube. That's a chemical reaction in a dish, not something that happened in a person. The USDA published a database of these values for years and pulled it in 2012, citing evidence the numbers had no established relevance to how the compounds behave in the body and were being routinely misused to market products.
The clinical picture backs that caution up. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health's review of antioxidants is blunt: people who eat more fruits and vegetables have lower rates of chronic disease, but antioxidant supplements have largely failed to reproduce that in trials, and a few high-dose versions caused harm. Eating the plants works. Isolating the chemistry and selling it by the scoop is a different proposition, and it has to prove itself separately.
Beetroot Is the One Ingredient With Real Performance Data
There is a genuine exception, and it isn't an antioxidant effect at all. Beetroot is dense in dietary nitrate, which the body converts to nitric oxide — a signal that widens blood vessels and makes muscle contraction slightly more oxygen-efficient. That mechanism has been tested to death, and a 2025 umbrella review in Nutrients pooled fifteen meta-analyses to see where it lands.
The honest answer: small, real, and specific. Time to exhaustion improved with a standardized effect size of 0.37 and the Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test by 0.27 — meaningful for interval work, which is most of what a fight sport asks of you. Aerobic capacity barely moved overall (0.16), and the split matters: recreational athletes gained (0.26) while professionals did not (0.08). Strength ran the other way, favoring trained athletes. Nobody here is getting a new engine — a few percent, mostly if you aren't already highly conditioned.
Timing was clearer than most supplement questions get: dosing two to three hours before training beat taking it daily for weeks. The athletes we coach at our martial arts school in Gallatin, TN get more from one well-timed dose before hard sparring than from a scoop with breakfast — the same before-you-train logic that governs pre-workout for athletes.
Straight answer: we don't make a red superfood powder, and nothing in our catalog contains beetroot. The closest we make is GMA Warrior Immune Boost — a scoop-mixed formula built on elderberry and acerola cherry, two of the same dark-red fruits these blends use. What separates it is the thing this article is complaining about: it prints its amounts. Over 1,000 mg of elderberry, 1,500 IU of vitamin D, 11 mg of zinc — numbers you can check.

Here is where the whole category falls apart. The umbrella review found benefit at a nitrate intake of roughly 8.3 to 16.4 mmol per day — about 515 to 1,017 mg. So the only question that matters is how much nitrate is in your scoop.
Researchers writing in Foods in 2023 tested fifty beetroot supplements to find out. Across the whole sample, nitrate per recommended daily dose ranged from 0.197 mg to 169 mg. Powders averaged 43 mg — roughly one-twelfth of the low end of the effective range. Only four of the fifty declared nitrate content at all. Two contained none of what they declared, and one delivered 4.2% of it. Sixty-four percent of the packaging failed to meet legal food-labelling requirements. The same team found that 100 g of fresh beetroot generally beat the supplements on antioxidant measures anyway.
So if a red superfood powder doesn't print a milligram figure for nitrate, you can't know whether you're buying the dose that worked in the trials or 4% of it. That one missing number decides whether the product does anything.
Tart Cherry, Whole Fruit, and What to Actually Do
Tart cherry is the other ingredient with a real evidence base, and it's more mixed than the marketing suggests. A 2025 meta-analysis of ten trials in Annals of Medicine and Surgery found tart cherry juice improved maximal voluntary contraction — a functional strength measure — by 9.13%, and lowered the inflammatory marker IL-6. But muscle soreness scores didn't improve, TNF-alpha didn't move, and creatine kinase actually rose. It appears to support how your muscles perform during recovery more than how they feel. And on the pigment itself: a 2024 review in Nutrients comparing anthocyanin bioavailability from whole foods versus extracts concluded that the evidence favors whole food. Whole red cabbage returned 18–113% of its anthocyanins through digestion; an anthocyanin-rich extract of the same vegetable returned 3–31%. The food matrix — the fiber and structure you throw away when you concentrate a fruit — releases the compounds slowly rather than dumping them, and that appears to matter.
Three rules. Eat the fruit when you can — it beats the scoop and costs less. If you want the beet effect for training, buy on disclosed nitrate milligrams or don't buy, and take it two to three hours out rather than daily. Ignore the antioxidant score; it's a test-tube number the USDA itself stopped publishing. Fifty years of coaching says the same thing every time — the athletes who win aren't the ones with the most impressive tub on the counter. Beets in a scoop can be a real edge for interval work. Buy the number, not the color.
